It gives me immense joy to welcome you to the Akal Eye Hospital & Lasik Laser Centre Fellowship Program. With over 40 years of experience in eye surgery, I have witnessed the transformation of ophthalmology in India. I was privileged to be among the first surgeons in the country to introduce phacoemulsification, and to have performed some of the maximum rollable lens implantations through 1 mm Phaconit Phaco surgery. These milestones were possible only through continuous learning, dedication, and a passion to serve.
But beyond surgical expertise, a true ophthalmologist must also carry empathy, discipline, and a zest for life. Outside the operation theatre, I have pursued swimming, cycling, track & field sports, sky jumping, off-roading, and singing — because a well-rounded life makes a well-rounded doctor.
Together with my beloved wife, Dr. Pushpinder Kaur, we established Akal Eye Hospital with the guiding principle:
“Jo jee aave, so raaji jaave”
(Whoever comes here, should return fully content).
Through this fellowship, our aim is to nurture the next generation of skilled and compassionate ophthalmologists who will carry forward this spirit. Here, you will not only refine your surgical skills in SICS and Phaco, but also learn the art of connecting with patients, leading teams, and serving communities.
I warmly invite you to join this journey, and to become part of the Akal Eye Hospital family.
Dr. Balbir Singh Bhaura
Director, Akal Eye Hospital & Lasik Laser Centre
Today, what pains me deeply is seeing how many young ophthalmologists are exploited in big hospitals. While their hard work is taken, they are rarely given the opportunity for proper surgical training. This results in a system where the next generation remains under-skilled, and our nation continues to face a shortage of truly trained ophthalmologists.
At Akal Eye Hospital, we believe in breaking this cycle. That is why our fellowship is designed differently. Training starts from the very first day. Our philosophy is simple: the sooner we train a surgeon, the sooner they can contribute meaningfully to society.
And to be very frank — the sooner the surgeon gets trained, the more beneficial he will be to the hospital, by the amount of work done by him. This is a win-win for both the fellow and the hospital.
Our motto in this program is: “Train the surgeon as fast as possible, so that together we can perform plenty of sight-restoring surgeries.”
This is not just about numbers — it is about creating confident, independent, and compassionate surgeons who can serve humanity.
